4.2.5    Example Use – Ventilation Scenario (Expansion of an Earth Dump)

4.2.5.1 Problem Definition

An earth dump was planned on the scale of 2.5 million m3 (small proposal) to 6 million m3 (large proposal) to supplement an already-existing dump for excavation and landfill material.

It was necessary to examine the question of whether the local wind field (and with it the ventilation of the neighboring built-up area) would be altered by the planned dump expansion. A decrease in the ventilation of the bordering residential and commercial areas was to be avoided as far as possible in view of a worsening in air quality and the local microclimate.

The highest elevation of the existing earth dump "Grüner Heiner I" amounted to 395 m above sea level, thus rising ca. 70 to 80 m above the surrounding lands (Figure 4/24).
